Radersburg, Montana |
Radersburg is a Census Designated Place in Broadwater County near the eastern foothills of the Elkhorn Mountains (well off the beaten path). Famed actress Myrna Loy was born Myrna Williams in Radersburg. Known as the "Queen of the Silver Screen," she appeared in 129 movies from the 1920's to the 1950's. A large landowner named Ruben Rader donated the land for the townsite, hence the name. The town became necessary in 1866 when John Keating opened the Keating Mine nearby. Then the bigger East Pacific gold claim was discovered north of town in 1867 and the population boomed. These days, Radersburg is a quiet, almost-ghost-town but there is a possibility the ore mill may reopen to process gold ore from Marysville (another old mining town with a present population of about 70). The problem with re-opening the ore mill is that it is old enough to be exempt from the requirements of the Montana metal-mine reclamation law. Most traffic in Radersburg these days consists of folks headed into the Elkhorns. |
