Flaxville, Montana

Flaxville was originally founded as Boyer, about 2.5 miles southwest of where the town is now. In 1912, Boyer (or Orville as some folks also called it in those days) was packed up and moved to a location at a siding on the Great Northern Railway when a branch line was built through the area in 1912. The Flaxville name came about because flax was about the only grain grown here back in those days.

After the railroad arrived, Flaxville prospered for several years. Then came the Great Depression, World War II and the Interstate Highway Act (1956). The years have seen a great decline in local population as folks moved to the cities and the farmers expanded their farms, working the land with modern equipment and taking more and more labor out of the equation. Better means of transportation also worked against the growing of Flaxville. The town is still here probably because the grain elevators beside the tracks can't be replaced. Flaxville was finally incorporated in 1955 and has since installed a municipal water and sewer system.

The Whitetail Reservoir is north of Flaxville and that attracts quite a few fishermen.
