Huntley, Montana

Huntley was named for S. O. Huntley, one of the major partners in the stagecoach firm Clark & Huntley. This was a stop on the stageline at the head of navigation on the Yellowstone River, however, river trade was infrequent and couldn't be counted on. The Northern Pacific Railroad arrived in 1882, connecting Huntley Station with Billings. By 1885, Huntley had a hotel, a blacksmith, two stores and a German Methodist and a Lutheran church.

In 1904, the federal government renegotiated a treaty with the Crow Nation and reduced the size of their reservation significantly. The next year, the United States Bureau of Reclamation began the "Huntley Project," an irrigation project along the Yellowstone River Valley that included Huntley with the railroad towns of Pompey's Pillar, Ballantine and Worden, all founded in 1907 (the same year the Huntley Project started delivering irrigation water through the newly dug canals).
