Humboldt County is in northwestern Nevada with Oregon to the north. A big part of the Black Rock Desert-High Rock Canyon Emigrant Trails National Conservation Area is here. The county was named for the Humboldt River, which John C. Fremont had earlier named for Baron Friedrich Heinrich Alexander von Humboldt, a German traveler, statesman and naturalist. Humboldt County contains 9,658 square miles of land and 10 square miles of water. The county seat is Winnemucca.
