Pershing County is in northwestern Nevada. The northwestern part of the county is lava beds and part of the famous Black Rock Desert. The county was created out of Humboldt County in 1919 and named for General John Pershing. Pershing County contains 6,037 square miles of land and 31 square miles of water. The county seat is Lovelock. Just south of Lovelock is the famous Lovelock Cave, an archaeological site where the well-preserved remains of "reed duck decoys" have been found, among other artifacts from a prehistoric hunting tribe.
