Grant County is in southwestern New Mexico with Arizona to the west. The Phelps-Dodge Corporation used to run a huge open pit copper mine near Tyrone, just south of Silver City.
Formed in 1868, Grant County contains 3,966 square miles of land and 2 square miles of water.
The county seat is Silver City.
