Salt River Canyon Wilderness
Salt River Canyon Wilderness
The 32,101-acre Salt River Canyon Wilderness is about 20 miles downstream from where US Highway 60 drops 2,000 feet to cross the Salt River and then climbs 2,000 feet on the other side to continue its journey. That particular river crossing is very dramatic, and 20 miles downstream, the Salt River Canyon Wilderness is even more spectacular. However, access to the area is very difficult and there are no maintained trails. Most folks who come here do so in the fast and furious river-rafting season between March 1 and May 15. In addition to needing a permit for that trip you'd better be highly experienced... Group size is limited to 15 people and forget about the pack animals: once you set out on that water you're committed to finishing the trip.
