Wellton, Arizona
Wellton is located in the valley about 29 miles east of Yuma, just off the I-8. Over the years the town has evolved into a major destination for Snow Birds, and winter usually sees a doubling of the population with the local RV parks filled with license plates from all over the western United States and the western provinces of Canada. As folks get tired of making that annual trip, they often decide to retire in Wellton. The town government currently runs two golf courses, one of which is newer and still sees a lot of new home construction around it.
Wellton was founded in 1878 but wasn't incorporated until 1970. The original reason for the settlement was several water wells were drilled here to service the steam engines of the Southern Pacific Railroad. Currently, irrigated agriculture is one of the year-round mainstays of the local economy.
