The Boise River in Eagle's Boise River Greenbelt |
Eagle is located about 10 miles west of Boise, between the Boise foothills to the north and the Boise River to the south. Eagle began life as an agricultural center but its predominantly rural roots are slowly being subsumed in the suburban growth of the Boise Metropolitan Area. To counteract that urbanizing effect, the town council is working hard to preserve a more "rurban" atmosphere: lots of open space, firm (but appealing) design standards, tree-lined streets and old style streetlights are the order of the day. Newer subdivisions are required to build "pocket parks" with hiking, biking and horseback riding pathways that connect the parks, the subdivisions and the Boise River Greenbelt together. The Greenbelt contains a number of ponds and other water amenities stretched out along the river corridor. Eagle also boasts a state-of-the-art skateboard park for those so inclined. Olde Town Eagle has Heritage Park: a central gathering place under large, shady trees with a gazebo and interactive water fountain. There is even an Arboretum Park in town with some 37 different species of trees sticking out of the ground. The Idaho Velodrome and Cycling Park is still under construction, but when complete it will be a world-class cycling facility. Eagle runs an Eagle Fun Days Festival every year where the local volunteer fire department puts on the "World's Largest Rocky Mountain Oyster Feed" to raise funds for their organization. Eagle Island State Park is between two rivers on the western boundary of Eagle, offering 500 acres of hiking and riding trails and some great fishing opportunities. There are 2 golf courses in town and 3 more on the edge of town. Camille Beckman, a global distributor of toiletries and cosmetics moved their manufacturing facility and corporate headuarters to Eagle in 2002. The Western Regional Headquarters of Conagra Foods is also located in Eagle. |
