In 1891, a town named Hunter was established on the Onweiler Farm just north of the present site of Meridian. The Settlers' Irrigation Ditch was built through the area in 1892 and with plenty of irrigation water, the area began to grow and became a fertile agricultural district. An International Order of Odd Fellows lodge was established in 1893 and, as it was located on the Boise Meridian, the lodge called itself Meridian. Shortly afterwards, the town was renamed. Today, Meridian is Idaho's fastest growing city, growing to the point it has now surpassed the populations of Pocatello and Idaho Falls, making Meridian the 3rd largest city in Idaho, behind Boise and Nampa. Part of what has caused that is Meridian's location about halfway between Boise and Nampa in the heart of Idaho's "High Tech Industrial Zone." |
