The Holter Lake Recreation Area is a 4-site day-use and camping complex centered around lower Holter Lake and the Missouri River, about 40 miles west of Great Falls and 40 miles north of Helena. The Holter Lake complex has an overnight camping area, boat ramps and docks, parking areas, swimming beach, fish cleaning stations, accessible toilets and drinking water. The rainbow trout, walleye, kokanee salmon and perch fishing is excellent. You can make reservations for the day-use picnic shelters at both Log Gulch and Holter Lake. Group camping reservations are also available for Log Gulch. Fees: $2/vehicle for day-use. RV/tent camping is $10 per unit (and includes the day-use fee). RV/tent camping at Holter Dam is $6 per camping unit. Camping stay limit is 7 consecutive days. Seasonal day-use passes run $25/vehicle. Group picnic reservations are $50/group plus the day-use or camping fees as applicable. Fees are normally charged from mid-May through mid-October. Holter Lake is just downstream on the Missouri River from the Gates of the Mountains Wilderness and also very close to the Sleeping Giant Wilderness Study Area. To get to Holter Lake: On the I-15, get off at either the Wolf Creek exit (#226) or the Craig exit (#234), then follow the signs for about 5 miles to the Holter Lake recreation complex. |
