The historic district of Lima, Montana |
Lima is located just north of the Montana-Idaho state line off of the I-15. The original founders named the site Allerdice, then the Utah & Northern Railroad built a depot here and named the place Spring Hill. However, some guy named Henry Thompson is supposed to have changed the name to Lima (after his hometown of Lima, Wisconsin) and that's the name that has stuck. The first post office was established in 1889. Providing a superb southern backdrop to the town is the Centennial Mountain Range, a steep, often snow-capped range that runs along the Continental Divide, which is also the state line. Also nearby is the Red Rock Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1935 to protect the trumpeter swan. This is an area of the old west where you can hike, hunt, fish, watch birds and relax to your heart's content, far from the maddening crowd... 8 miles northwest of Lima via the I-15 is the exit for Dell and the southern entrance to the Big Sheep Creek Back Country Byway. |
