Originally founded as Great Falls Army Air Base in 1942, the facility was renamed Malmstrom Air Force Base in honor of Colonel Einar Axel Malmstrom in 1955. Over the years, the commands and missions carried out at Malmstrom AFB have changed many times. These days, Malmstrom is one of three US Air Force Bases that maintains and operates the Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile as part of the Global Strike Command that is headquartered at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, Colorado. |
