Ulm, Montana |
The town of Ulm is located on a ranch formerly owned by an Indiana-born cattleman named William Ulm. The town is about 12 miles southwest of Great Falls and is located on a siding of the Great Northern Railway. When the railroad came through in 1887-1888, grain elevators were built on the siding and Ulm became a local shipping point for wheat, cattle and other agricultural commodities from the area. Nearby is First Peoples Buffalo Jump (formerly Ulm Pishkun) State Park, a buffalo kill site from the days before white Americans arrived in the area. "Pishkun" is a Blackfeet term loosely translated as "deep blood kettle," and a pishkun was a cliff formation that the Indians would herd buffalo over to break their legs and render them easy to kill. The Ulm Pishkun Buffalo Jump is most likely the largest such buffalo jump on Earth. The cliffs are more than a mile long and the compacted bison bones below them are nearly 13 feet deep. The site is estimated to have been in use by Native Americans from about 900 CE to about 1500 CE. First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park is also a popular place for rafters to put into the Missouri River and float down toward Great Falls. |
