Sun River, Montana |
The post office was established in Sun River in 1868, one of the first post offices in Montana. The settlement is at an easy ford in a bend of the Sun River, about 18 miles west of Great Falls. This was on the Mullan Road, a route used to get from the head of navigation on the Missouri River at Fort Benton to the gold fields of western and southern Montana, although many travelers used the route to get to Fort Walla Walla in Washington Territory, too. Back in those days, Sun River was a rowdy place where miners, trappers and bullwhackers came together on the edge of Blackfeet country. The Sun River the town is named for begins deep in the Bob Marshall Wilderness to the west. The Sun is a very scenic river that offers world-class fly-fishing for trout and mountain whitefish. |
