The Starkville area had several coal mines in the hills around town, but Starkville itself was built along the railroad tracks leading out of Trinidad and up over Raton Pass to the south. There was a railroad siding built here by the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad in 1880 to take advantage of the water flowing through in Gallinas Creek before heading up the ever-steeper hill.
Just south of the city limits of Trinidad, rumor has it that Starkville was where you used to go looking for entertainment of the "rowdier" persuasion... Actually, during Prohibition days, anywhere "up the canyon" from Trinidad was where the bootlegger's did their thing.
