The Big Smoky Valley started seeing European settlers arrive in the 1860's. In the beginning, most folks were into ranching and farming but gold and silver discoveries in the surrounding mountains brought in prospectors and floods of miners. Gold was discovered near Round Mountain in 1905 but a bigger find in 1906 is what started the town to building. By 1907, stagecoaches were running a daily route between Round Mountain and Tonopah. By 1909, Round Mountain had a library, a hospital, a school and hotels, banks and stores. The population has fluctuated up and down over the years but even today, gold mining is the big business around here. The Round Mountain Gold Corporation runs a large heap leach gold extraction operation, so large that the company built the Hadley subdivision, complete with an airstrip, community center, modern K-12 schools, gymnasium, public indoor swimming pool, fire station, residential area, gas station, grocery store and Nevada's longest 9-hole golf course (with its own restaurant, lounge and pro shop, of course). |
