White Pine County is in east central Nevada with Utah to the east. Great Basin National Park is here. White Pine County contains 8,876 square miles of land and 21 square miles of water. The original county seat was Hamilton (site of a short-lived silver strike) but when a large fire burned in Hamilton in 1887, the county seat was moved to Ely.

For many years the big business around here was open pit copper mining and smelting. These days, the mining has dropped off and the remaining mining companies have found that it's cheaper to ship the copper ore to Japan and have it smelted over there.
