A large part of the central and northern Sawatch is enclosed within the boundaries of the Collegiate Peaks and Mt. Massive Wildernesses. The Sawatch Range has 15 fourteeners - more than California and more than any other Colorado range. Four of Colorado's five highest peaks are in the Sawatch. There are a few photos from the Sawatch Range on this page but there are more photos on the Independence Pass pages: The Road In, The Climb Up and The Summit. Independence Pass crosses the Sawatch between Granite and Aspen. When the pass is open, I highly recommend the drive (especially when the leaves are changing in the fall). |
